MinneCulture | Come one, come all to the Queer Circus!

Come One, Come All to the Queer Circus! Founded by Martina Mayotte (The Bearded Lady) and Gabe Gabriel (The Ring Master with Silver Slipper Productions), Queer Circus is a menagerie of spectacular performers creating an all-inclusive “cirque-lesque” experience to promote queer and non-binary visibility.

Queer Circus builds unique shows for a variety of spaces, including Can Can Wonderland, the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Lush Lounge & Theatre, Twin Cities Pride and other events across Minnesota. KFAI’s Dixie Treichel recently visited the Queer Circus and spoke with the founders and some of the performers in today’s story.

MinneCulture | Take a road trip across America’s queer history with Zaylore Stout

Zaylore Stout (he/him) is a gay, African American attorney and author of “Our Gay History in Fifty States.” He was inspired to write “Our Gay History” while he was on a cross country road trip. Passing through Laramie, WY, he was reminded of Matthew Shepard, the gay student who was tortured and left to die in Laramie in 1998. Stout wanted to honor Shepard and other queer Americans throughout history.

“Our Gay History in Fifty States” is an award-winning illustration of queer American history on a state by state basis. Zaylore is currently working on his second book, “Our Black History in Fifty States.” KFAI’s Dixie Treichel spoke with Zaylore about his work and some of the Minnesotans who most inspire him.

MinneCulture | A Sharp New Skill

Recreational ax throwing spaces have been popping up across the Twin Cities. An activity historically reserved for frontiersmen and lumberjacks, ax throwing is now available to all. Getting the ax to stick in the target isn’t always easy, but at Bad Axe Throwing in Minneapolis, site lead Ollie and ax throwing coach Tomia will teach anyone who wants to learn.

MinneCulture | Tattooing Beyond the Binary

M Nijiya (they/them) is a tattoo artist and owner of Jackalope Tattoo. Jackalope is an all non-binary, trans, queer and female-identifying tattoo shop in South Minneapolis. M’s specialties include black and gray portraits, gender-confirming tattoo work, scar cover-ups for mastectomies and trans top surgery, as well as 3D nipple tattooing.

Kim Hines is an African-American queer woman who is a theater artist, author, mentor and educator. She has been in the business of theater over 50+ years and her plays have been performed around the country.

Belonging to a family of doctors and medical professionals, she is well-versed in health issues and her family has been severely impacted by the vast array of disinformation surrounding COVID-19. KFAI’s Dixie Treichel spoke with Hines about her personal and professional experiences throughout the pandemic.

Jerome Evans is an African-American queer man who works in marketing with the Minnesota Service Cooperatives. He is also co-chair of the Public Health Advisory Committee for the City of Minneapolis and host of the TV show “Bottomless Coffee with Jerome” on MCN6 sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Health. KFAI’s Dixie Treichel spoke with Evans about how his work has met the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

MinneCulture | Perseverance, Resilience, and Inspiration: A Conversation with John R. Killacky

John R. Killacky’s new book “because art: Commentary, Critique, & Conversation” is a collage of writings about his life and work across the country as a performing artist, arts administrator, curator and legislator.

Prominent in the book is his time as the Performing Arts Curator at the Walker Art Center (1988-1996) in Minneapolis. This was a time of radical queer performance art, the AIDS Crisis, Reagan-Bush politics, culture wars of the time and attacks on the National Endowment for the Arts. Killacky is a gay, differently abled artist and is currently in the Vermont House of Representatives.

Included in the book are commentaries on a debilitating spinal surgery, Zen Buddhism, and censorship; critiques on such artists as Ron Athey, Eiko Otake, John Cage, and Keith Haring; plus interviews with artists Alison Bechdel, Trisha Brown, Janis Ian, Bill T. Jones, Tony Kushner, Meredith Monk and more.
