A vinyl enthusiast who plays records on the air.
I joined KFAI as a volunteer in spring of 2004, and worked Cart Crew for the first 6 months I was at the station. I became board certified in Fall 2004, and almost immediately became an engineer for the evening news (on Thursdays and Fridays). I continued as a news engineer until August of 2005. During this time, I subbed for many music programmers (Groove Garden; This Little Girl’s Gone Rockin’; The Strawberry Pop Show) until my program Jet Set Planet was lucky enough to be selected by the Program Committee for the Friday morning 2 to 5am slot. I have been the DJ for that program ever since: approximately 2 years in the early morning slot, 3 years on Monday nights from 10:30-midnight, and 8 more years at 8 to 10 Friday nights.
After Jet Set Planet, I started Elevator, starring Les Mannick. That program had two seasons on KFAI’s FA2 (online streaming service) but is now part of Heavy Rotation and airs on a monthly basis, every fourth Sunday Night/Early Monday Morning from midnight to 2am. For the non night owl, it also streams on demand for two weeks after it airs.
Many thanks to Steve Kyle who accompanied me on so many record thrifting runs over the years and for participating in those legendary record drafts. Also thanks to Lars Jenkins, DJ Izzy, Todd Melby and especially to Carol Nethery-Powell for their help in record collecting and vinyl discussions over the years!
