Gearing up for a summer of great shows we heard a set of contemporary desert blues with tracks by Tinariwen and Bombino (coming to the Cedar in July) and Tamikrest (whose leader, guitarist Ousmane Ag Massa, first heard Tinariwen when he was five years old). Bill brought in some rare party music from Tanzania, Jojo shared some tracks from Kenya and Uganda, and we started off the whole thing with new music from two formidable sons of African superstars, Vieux Farka Touré and Femi Kuti.

5/19 in a nutshell…
Counting backwards from the 3rd hour, we’ve brought back The Night Sky’s Turning Blue by Buford O’Sullivan for so long as the night sky indeed begins turning blue during the last hour of RSST. We GotchaSKAvered Phoenix City this week with the help of UK outfit The Family Circle. Women of Ska made up th 4@4, Sherwood B. Funn spun some new Mr. Ho (in which the Orchestrotica morphs from Esquivel big band into Third Stream exotica quartet to remind us all how cool Arthur Lyman still remains all these years after he began decomposing_ all this and Steve Turre, Cal Tjader and Shiina Ringo, too! In the first hour, Millie Small serenades Poor Little Willie, Raymond Harper goes on a Safari, and Bunny Skitter once again lecture a chauffeur on the evils of driving drunk. Hey, the message can’t be repeated often enough, so… DON’T DO IT! ‘Nuff said.

RAMSAY MIDWOOD, ERIK KOSKINEN + BIG SANDY: Ramsay Midwood and Erik Koskinen were our in-studio guests today. They performed a few songs live, plus we played some tracks from Ramsay’s upcoming CD “Larry Buys A Lighter”.

Thanks to Big Sandy (of Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys) for calling in from the road. They were coming to town for a gig at Lee’s Liquor Lounge. Appropriately enough, we had “Tequilla Calling” playing when Sandy called.

New music, in addition to the advance tracks by Ramsay Midwood, included The Michael Lewis Band (with Sonny Burgess, Billy Lee Riley & Travis Wammack), The 44’s, and Steve Earle’s most recent.

If you want to check out the playlist for the show, hit the blue “more” link below. It’ll also allow you to listen to the archive of the show. Music starts around 3minutes and 40 seconds into the archive.
