Jazz

For our broadcast from the Minnesota State Fair, I played lots of jazz interpretations of R&B songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s by folks like Lester Bowie, Hank Crawford, Don Byron, The Jack Brass Band, Melvin Sparks, and a couple of others. Add in a few songs about food by Duke Ellington, the Crusaders, and Wes Montgomery, and there you have it.

From here on in, it gets rough (575)

Back to Europe for some Hot Club jazz & a tribute to Belgian chromatic harmonica player Toots Thielemans.  Then to Cuba for a Celia Cruz set alongside local orchestra Malamanya – celebrating a CD release on Friday evening at the Cedar Cultural Center – and following up with the Pedrito Martinez Group !  A quick pass through Peru for Novalima and a set of Buffy Sainte-Marie in town Friday evening as well !  Closing up with a few African artists and another song from Prince – which still deserves heavy rotation !

Had keyboardist William Duncan in the studio today to talk about his CD release party coming up on Friday, August 26th at Walker-West Music Academy. William is the brother of jazz vocalist Debbie Duncan. Debbie also sings background vocals on this release as well as other jazz luminaries. The release called "We Give Thanks" is a spiritual-inspirational CD, recorded at Walker West in St. Paul, where both William and Debbie are instructors. For more on the release party, go to: www.walkerwest.org.
