Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering at KFAI
Volunteers at work for KFAI
1. How do I become a volunteer?
There are four steps to becoming a volunteer:
- Review the list of open volunteer positions below.
-Are you interested in any of these positions? Then contact Pam Hill Kroyer, and let her know which position most interests you!
-If you are not interested in any of the open positions available, please know the list is updated when new positions become available.
- Read the most important parts of the New Volunteer Handbook to begin volunteering, and keep a link to the handbook for you to refer to as a useful guide to KFAI. Click the title below to open the handbook in PDF format:
If you cannot open a PDF file, please contact Pam Hill Kroyer to request a printed copy.
- Co-sign with members of KFAI staff the Letter of Agreement (found on the last pages of the Handbook) when you begin your first volunteer position, and...
- Fill out a New Volunteer Profile so that KFAI may keep in touch with you.
2. How can I get my own show on KFAI?
The first step is to become an active volunteer. Active volunteers give nine hours to the station over the course of three months. You are then eligible to take free training classes that can help prepare you to become a programmer. Once you have completed basic classes, you will be in a better position to apply for program openings. Please note, you can apply for your own program before you become a volunteer. In the event of a contest for an open time slot, however, more weight is given to current volunteers' proposals.
3. What do KFAI volunteers do?
Nearly everything! Volunteers produce programming, work in the music library, represent the station at events, participate in committees, create station promos, contribute to the web site, and much more.

Production Team Member
The production team, also known as Cart Crew, creates our pre-recorded on-air announcements. They meet Wednesdays at 7pm. They usually work about two hours, although you can be flexible within that and the workload on a production crew varies. Working with a crew is a good, low-pressure gig: when you are there, you can add your voice; if you cannot make it, however, the team can continue their work. The only requirement is the ability to work with a team. This is a good entry-level position to get started with KFAI and with radio.
