(bumper) MUTANT FROGS: One for Freetime (3:08) / Warts 'n' all [Skankworks/IMT]

...RINGROLLLLLL!!!!!! Four ska-related Shiina Ringo goodies!

SHIINA RINGO with TOKYO SKA PARADISE ORCHESTRA: Mayonaka wa Junketsu (4:13) / cd single [Toshiba/EMI] - The song that hipped me to Her Majesty 4 years ago... I was sitting at a computer one February night in the now-famous Studio 5, discovering the wealth of TSPO Youtubes online, and... I got Mayonaka'd for the first time. I HAD to hear more S.R... and I did! The rest is RSST history.

TOMOSAKA RIE: Tokai no Manner (2:53) / Toridori [EMI Japan] - S.R. wrote it, her band Tokyo Jihen played it, and they set it to a driving pop-ska feel. And dig the album cover art on Toridori... WOW!!!

TOKYO JIHEN: Kronekodow (2:51) / Variety [Toshiba/EMI] - S.R. wrote this one from the imagined point-of-view of her black cat, Goethe. Not strictly-speaking ska, it's still built on a hypercaffeinated  upstroke, and drummer Toshiki Hata manages to work in a 2Tone influence in certain passages during the tune... and the whole thing's just maniacal fun, with a "Dizzy"-ing ending... ;^)

SHIINA RINGO: Mayonaka wa Junketsu (live!) (4:13) / Electric Mole [Toshiba/EMI] - Electric Mole is the official Sugoroku Ecstasy Tour dvd, and the live-recorded debut of a then-unnamed Tokyo Jihen, covering S.R.'s TSPO collab, Izawa's frantic piano comping making up for the absence of the mighty Tokyo Ska horns.

And now... just because we haven't played a chiptune version of MBL before, the GotchaSKAllipop proudly presents...

_And what have all those Japanese recordings (excepting, of course, my very own Frogs) been leading up to, you might be asking? Glad you did, if you did. When I was a kid in the '70s, Horror, Inc. used to air all different kinds of Dracula/Frankenstein/Mummy/Blob/Sherlock Holmes/Charlie Chan/etc. movies, and I was hooked. My favorites quickly became the giant monster/daikaiju flicks from both sides of the Pacific (and Atlantic!) and before long I even named my _bicycle..._ "Godzilla's Revenge"! The first G-flick I ever saw was the Raymond Burr-ized version of the original, and I tuned in each week to see the Big G battle King Kong, Mothra, Ghid(o)rah, and those nefarious aliens from Planet X. The music for most of these was written by Masaru Sato(h) (h optional, from what I've seen in print) and Akira Ifukube. I didn't bring some of what I thought I did to this show, so I played tracks from "Gorath" (killer planet on collision course with Earth) from a dual-soundtrack release called "Tidal Wave/Gorath". Shoulda played 2 "Tidal Wave" tracks instead... I'd forgotten that "Gorath's" music was the work of Kan Ishii!!    Anyway, here's how the set went down, and you WILL hear some Sato next week.

AKIRA IFUKUBE: South Sea Demon - Giant Octopus vs. King Kong (4:52) / Toho-Daiei SFX Film Music [Futureland/Toho] > (main title) Terror of Mechagodzilla (4:31) / sdtk. Terror of Mechagodzilla [Futureland/Toho]

KAN ISHII: Ending (1:02) > Space Pilot (ver. 1 instrumental) > We Are Space Pilots (instrumental ver.) (2:13) / sdtx. Tidal Wave/Gorath [Victor Japan]

MIKE THEODORE ORCHESTRA: High on Mad Mountain (8:15) (tt) / [Westbound]
