Next Tuesday, March 8, is the centenary of International Women’s Day; in celebration, all of the music of this program is interpreted by women (mainly from Latin America but also from Spain and Portugal). The literature segment presents the second and last part of a dialog on literature with the Nobel Prize Mario Vargas Llosa.

This program presents music from Cuba: Arsenio Rodríguez and a few examples of the “Nueva Trova”; music fom Mexico: Mostly ”Son de Madera” (playing tomorrow, March 11, at The Cedar Cultural Center); and music from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The literature segment presents poetry by the Mexican Jaime Sabines.

This program presents some Danzones, Mexican Sones and a celebration of Ireland and St. Patrick’s day with a Mexican touch. It also presents approximations to Latin America by three American composers (Scott Joplin, George Gershwin and Aaron Copland). The literature segment presents the first part of “El Rayo Macoy” by Rafael Ramírez Heredia.
