September 2011 Rocket Ship Ska Trip Archives

9/1 in a nutshell…
Just in case you’re wondering now what the September GotchaSKAvered Ska Cover-of-the-Month Club selection is… I just told you! That’s right, the Andy Joey original, You’re Wondering Now, gets The Specials’ Peel Sessions treatment this week, and four more choice covers the rest of the month! Also, Dueling Umbrella Bands, both of whom play ska(!) made up the 4@4, plus we saluted the late Jerry Lieber in fine Giuliano Palma style with The Bluebeaters’ Poison Ivy. Meanwhile, aboard the Voov, Sherwood B. Funn has discovered the charms of one Mini Kyute, here heard singing Stevie Wonder’s My Cherie Amour… right after the incredible chanting weed. Also listen for some Sun Ra, and a brand-new Imelda May goodie. And to close out the Ooh, YMO’s Yukihiro Takahashi Kid-Naps the Dreamer, winding up an opening oldies hour of everyone from Dennis Blackbeard Bovell to The Selecter to Toots to Prince Buster.
Pow! Right in the…

9/8 in a nutshell…
Angelo Moore meets TSPO! Amy Winehouse does The Specials! Giuliano Palma does Bond_ James Bond. And that’s just hour 3, led off by an early Nyahbinghi pre-ska set revolving around Count Ossie and Rico. In hour 2, Sherwood spun the complete Voodoo Suite by Perez Prado and Shorty Rogers, and the Ooh, the Opening Oldies Hour, spanned the boogie-fied pre-ska period through 2Tone.

9/15 in a nutshell…
The Mixtress, Sami Koivikko and Mutant Frogs got the beatmix treatment in Hour 3, sometime after The Frits delivered quite possibly the only non-ska treatment of GotchaSKAvered September selection You’re Wondering Now you’ll ever hear, hot on the heels of a rocksteady-fied 4@4. Sherwood recently snapped up Senor Coconut’s Around the World from which we heard a Prince cover (not Buster, mind you, but Prince). Jaymz Bee took care of business, as did Lester Lanin (dropping an ad jingle medley on non-commercial radio listeners’ sensitive ears!) …oh, and are you feelin’ a change in the air? That’s Shiina Ringo and her jazz pals the Pimps (Soil @ Pimp Sessions, to be precise). La-la-la-la-la! In the Ooh, we heard the other Special Beat (the one not made up of 2Tone vets) and more of the finest ska of the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s. Oooooh, yeah!

9/22 in a nutshell…
This week in GotchaSKAvered land, Lynval Golding was Wondering Now, but not with his usual band The Specials… he was guesting on Skanic’s Spare Shells tribute track. Spare Shells was a fine Australian comp in which bands from around the world played Specials tunes (and older tunes The Specials made famous all over again). Ship’s Library was the theme of the 4@4… we didn’t actually have to bring any of it; it was already there! Sherwood B. Funn had vibraphones on the brain (always Funn to be had when Sherwood goes that route) and in the Ooh, Kentrick Patrick was the recipient of some Evening News, Millie loved Willie and Owen Gray Mashed It! …just not in that order.

9/29 in a nutshell…
The end of summer, the end of September, and The End as a 4(+1)@4 theme! Indeed, even the GotchaSKAvered’s September selection is about The End, and the overall theme extended beyond that! Not to worry, though, we’re far, far, far from the end of RSST… you can have my ship when you pry the controls from my cold, dead fingers!:^) After Hours Tries It Again, TSPO Opens Our Eyes and Bonnie Pink doesn’t get Chrissie Hynde wrong! Backing up a bit, Sherwood delivers Perez Prado’s near-8-minute epic Mosaico Cubano, Arthur Lyman’s exotic Vera Cruz and the singularly unique Andre Popp’s Bloody Serenade. The Ooh, or Opening Oldies Hour, included choice covers of Long Day Short Night and A Rockin’ Good Way, as well as the Blues delivered by Rico’s British outfit The Rudies, just before Baba Brooks got upstaged by his piano player at a Jam Session… WOW, anybody know who that cat was? As Granville Williams might have said, he was Wailin’! That cut really fades too soon…
