6/2/2011 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

6/2 in a nutshell…
Consider yourself Ringrolled… The Cap’n ‘n’ Cozy worked out a secret backroom deal with Sherwood in an underground dive somewhere in Big Neck, an isthmus between North and South Bays on Sherwood’s Planet, where anytime Sherwood forgets to play Shiina Ringo on his show, her sounds’ll hit ya between the ears in the 3rd hour! As SR’s got exactly one ska tune released under her own name, this will also be known as getting Mayonaka’d…
A new month (June), a new GotchaSKAvered! Your friendly neighborhood Ska Cover-of-the-Month Club has selected a movie theme this time ‘round… Exodus by Ernest Gold. This week, Japan’s Sideburns do the honors. In the Voov, Hal Blaine’s June tune is Trippin’ Out, and out we trip! You won’t want to miss what follows. And, of course, a fabulous ska/rocksteady oldies selection dominates Hour 1. Chikkidup!

6/9/2011 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

6/9 in a nutshell…
This week’s playlist corrects some misinformation I’d posted! Shame on me… regarding Perfume’s impossibly rare ska single they cut when they were, like, 11 and 12, and which was distributed only in their hometown, Hiroshima! The only reason I’ve even heard this thing is it popped up on You Tube! The one-ska-wonders, currently techno-pop hotties with a song in Cars 2, quickly became a staple on my show (I’m gonna bust an all one-ska-wonders set one of these weeks! Submissions? Send ‘em to KFAI Box 3 1808 Riverside Av. Mpls MN 55454 c/o Capt. 2much Freetime!) Jazz Jamaica took us on an Exodus for GotchaSKAvered, I celebrated big 5-1 with an Area 51-inspired UFOs/Dreams/Space, etc. 4(+1)@4, Sherwood threw in a jazz trombonist actually named Roswell (Rudd) in addition to the usual splendiferous space-age lounge selection he brings every week, and a Ball Of Fire (a.k.a. Echo 4-2) launched this week’s Rocket Ship. Feel the roar…

6/16/2011 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

6/16 in a nutshell…
OOPS! The 4@4 shoulda had Zap Pow’s Wild Honey in there somewhere; the set was instead bookended on both sides by Tommy McCook’s The Watergate Affair! Oh, well… as good an excuse as any to begin the show’s description with an Oops, right? At least GotchaSKAvered came out as planned_ Bad Manners treated us to their take on Exodus. Mr. Review also brought Tarzan kicking and screaming into the ’80s, and Natty Bo delivered a double-shot of Ska Cubano. Working backwards, Sherwood B. Funn sampled papayas and mangos a la Rosemary Clooney and Shiina Ringo (straight from the Shady Nuke!). Sometime during the oldies hour, a UFO crashed in ’47. It was one of ours… happens a lot around here. ;^)

6/23/2011 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

6/23 in a nutshell…

A double-shot of GotchaSKAvered makes up one (two, actually) of this week’s hour-3 highlights… two Exoduses (Exodae? Exodii?)… one each by Ernest Ranglin and The Skatalites, in that order. Also, Skinhead Heroes are the 4@4 theme_ look for Roy Symarip Ellis, Prince Buster, Dave Ansel, and Dice the Boss in this set. Working our way back, Sherwood B. Funn discovers a swell B. Bumble the Stingers cover done up in high style by the Krontjong Devils, after kicking off the Voovie Doo hour with an all-David hat-trick (Rose, Carroll and Seville). The Cap’n Cozy were inspired by Rumpus Room Ron to give Annette Funicello and Neil Sedaka (Ska-daka!) spins, in addition to the usual 1st-hour ska-spects. Chikit! Chikit! Chikit! Chikit!

6/30/2011 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

6/30 in a nutshell…

Exodus, the GotchaSKAvered Ska Cover-of-the-Month Club selection for June (this week the dub version by week 1’s Sideburns from their Exodus album btw) ties in quite nicely with the 4(+1)@4 theme of Travel and Destinations, with entries from TC’s own Umbrella Bed, Kagoshima’s Authentic Rocksteady Traditional Ska practitioners ARTS, Tokyo’s Ska Paradise Orchestra and more. Sherwood was pouring mostly double-shots in the Voovie Doo, starting off with Shiina Ringo and the brand-spankin’ new Dai Hakken (Great Discovery) from her firecracker Tokyo Jihen outfit (making their big-band debut in cahoots with anime and occasional Godzilla soundtrack guy Takayuki Hattori wielding the baton)… Fly Me to Heaven, already a single, is now Dai Hakken’s 13th track! Leading into all this was a nicely all-over-the-map ska oldies hour delivered by the Cap’n and Cozy. Fast forward to The End (which happens here each week… ;^)) and the on-air singing debut of our regular Takeaway countdowner Cy Knopf (signing off!) ( …Cy-Kning Opf???) (Booooo…!)
