January 2011 Rocket Ship Ska Trip Archives

1/6 in a nutshell…
Let’s cut straight to the new feature inaugurated this week… the GotchaSKAvered Ska Cover-Of-The-Month Club! This month: Byron Lee’s Jamaica Ska, and strictly cover versions thereof, and starting off the feature with a mystery record we couldn’t trace back to its original source! All we know is, somewhere in Mexico back in the ’60s, Jamaica Ska was covered by somebody named Tammy. Tammy who? Mystery. Label? Mystery. Ever officially released? Mystery. And this thing’s good. Real good! The 4@4 was basically an Air Space Museum of Ska, the Opening Oldies set began incorporating more post-‘60s ska, and on the Funn front, Milt Jackson and Xavier Cugat had an extra candle on their cakes this week. Pffffff!

1/13 in a nutshell…
The sound of the opening oldies set is starting to mutate… hey, 2Tone is in its 30s, those Specials, Selecter and Madness classics are officially Oldies and as we do more filling-in-the-gaps of Ska’s lost decade (the ’70s) there are simply more oldies to play now, and Hour 1 will certainly reflect that as Ska progresses into Century 21, Decade 2. Adding another candle to the cake this week: Suggs from Madness, and lates Roland Alphonso and Vic Mizzy. Rest in peace, or if you prefer, make some noise in the great beyond! The 4(+1)@4 mutated from the very first track as the wrong cd kicked off the set, and GotchaSKAvered features Annette doin’ the Jamaica Ska this week. Now bow your head…

1/20 in a nutshell…
Entering the studio just prior to airtime, an incessant bell was imploring anybody who was forced to listen to answer the phone that no-one was trying to call in on, or alternately let people in who weren’t standing outside the building. If I were that bell I would have SHUT UP already, but I wasn’t… so I led the oldies set off (after Rocket Ship) with Roland Alphonso’s If I Were A Bell, naturally. Roland or no Roland, that bell was still going strong during The Takeaway. We had a bumper-crop of 1/20 birthday boys to celebrate, from Juan Tizol to Esquivel to Ray Anthony to Jean-Jacques Perrey! Lo-o-o-ong cuts (7:min.+) defined the 4(+1)@(a wee bit past)4, and GotchaSKAvered pumped out, to our knowledge, the only instrumental Jamaica Ska out there. The Byron Lee hit was covered by the West Side Symphony Steel Orchestra. Now swing your arms…

1/27 in a nutshell…
A Roland Alphonso jump/ska/shuffle on Quizas (Perhaps) makes its RSST debut this week, as does a Georgie Fame take on Prince Buster’s Madness and sides by Googie Rene and Sammy Leeds… and don’t miss Caro Emerald!!! Señor Coconut is a friend… nuff said. The 4(+1)@4’s all about the TV, from songs about it to show themes, and GotchaSKAvered wraps up its tribute to Jamaica Ska with… Wash Wash??? …and, by the way, don’t miss Caro Emerald!!!
