August 2010 Rocket Ship Ska Trip Archives

8/5 in a nutshell…
The 3:00-hour highlight was the oldies set… all stuff reissued by Trojan_ but then stay tuned for the rest, including The Drastics vs. Michael Jackson! Sherwood B. Funn’s awash in old 45s again, some from his recent trip to the new Hymie’s space! The 4(+1)‘s made up of old Unicorn sides, and stay tuned for a delicious Brazilian Portuguese Lollipop. Mmmmmmmmmmm… !

8/12 in a nutshell…
An old Dave Barker 45, Funkey Reggae, made its RSST debut, finding itself in the company of the likes of The Khandars (The Maytals?), Owen Gray, (Prince) Buster’s All Stars, Beatle-happy Ringo Ska and a new one from Madison-ite Tony Brown, also making his RSST debut. Sherwood kicks off his Planet this week with a Dot surf rarity leading to a set of Dave Pike (The Dave Pike Set! Honest!), psych/lounge by The Astros, the West Side Symphony Steel Orchestra doing Byron Lee (acing the man himself on his own Jamaica Ska, and someone we’ve taken to calling Countess Ringula. (Guess who?…!) In the 4:am hour, jump up to the sounds of Jump Up! and get effervescent with Fizzy! (Who??) Then hang around for the mellow, jazzy TSPO bassist Tsuyoshi Kawakami crew skanking on an old Bacharach favorite. Ssssmmmoooooooooothh, baby!

8/19 in a nutshell…
A very rocksteady-centric Hour 1 with some uptempo pepper spicing things up roughly ‘round the :30 mark, give or take. Sherwood B. Funn gets {HOOKED!} on Lucy Woodward (just like she probably figured he wood) in a set sprinkled with goodies from Perez Prado, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Rumba Club and more. Rockin’ Steady Across the Pond describes the 4@4, and the Coyabalites, counting Ernest Ranglin as a member, feed us this week’s Lollipop. After the UFO crash, we cross the other pond and get J-centric for a while. EnSka, anyone?

8/26 in a nutshell…
All oldies the first hour, except for bumpers_ a set bursting with the sounds of Derrick Morgan, Lee Perry, the Mighty Vikings, Jack Sparrow, some outfit called The Beans, and more! Then Sherwood B. Funn indulges his vibraholic side with shots of Kurt Weil, Emil Richards (in the Paul Horn Quintet) and whoever that cat is on Tk. 10 of the Lucy Woodward album! The 4@4 salutes The Ska Parade, and Betka Stankova sings about her Libi Bob. Then it’s Tarzan, a bald guy, dolphins, Bo Evil and Tamio Okuda with TSPO blowing up the rest of the show. Boom!
