April 2010 Rocket Ship Ska Trip Archives

It’s being billed in one of our fine studios as Pledge Mania 2010… but you don’t have to already be a maniac to support KFAI with your dollars; we’d be perfectly happy to turn you into one at your convenience! If our opening Western-inspired ska oldies set doesn’t do the job, howzabout Rocksteady Zombies, Godzilla (and King Kong) Jazz, meeting up with Imelda May on the Moon, some Doom Dub from Fishbone, and Yvonne Prenosilova’s Lollipop (named Bob, btw)… not to mention the German Ska Munsters!
EEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

It’s a crash course in ob-SKA-rities as the RSST packs most of the first hour with oldies we never even heard of until last week… including the SEQUEL to Prince Buster’s Al Capone (because Al himself was sick at the time, y’know… ), called Baby Face Nelson, on which the Prince even manages to throw Machine Gun Kelly into the mix by the end of the record! Sherwood’s middle-hour playlist was so short because of a lot of long tunes, and we dedicated this week’s 4(+1)-in-a-row to Johnny D… Ska, Italian Style. In the LOTW rerun, Agnes Loti serves up Lollipop a la Français to her Mon Idole. Yummmmmm!

Tonight’s Evening News… a Voodoo Man, an Earth Man and Sam the Fisherman re-enter atmosphere in a Ball of Fire and land in Ska Town_ and that’s all before the first bumper break! Later on, Palemina and The Trojans Keep On Running and Little Tempo Shakes It Up, Baby! Seeing all this, the exhausted Miceteeth Sleep On Steps. The Skatalites’ 8+-min. live Fidel Castro goes out to TC’s new rocksteady outfit The Dropsteppers.
Sherwood B. Funn’s Voovie Doo Lounge orbits on a trajectory from which Riz Ortolani, Earl Bostic, Kev Hopper and Duke Ellington can be heard before the online archive cuts off at 1hr47min. interrupting Alec Wilder (oops! sorry!). If you recorded the whole show, we have a politically-inspired 4(+1)-in-a-Row before rerunning Marty Gold’s instrumental Lollipop on the LOTW. We cross Moon River on our way to a safe landing to let you off at 5:am. Bon voyage!

After this week’s 1st-gen oldies set, the mighty Tokyo Ska delivers the first of 4 rounds with a track from pretty deep in their own history, Hurry Up!! from Moods for Tokyo Ska. Later, you hear ‘em backing Rico here and Ringo there, and bringing the symphony (and the surf!) on Ai no Sanka with Strings… coffee, anyone? André Popp, B. Bumble, Tipsy and Harry Partch help provide the soundtrack in the Voovie Doo Lounge, and the mysterious Fizzy sings the Lolli rerun-of-the-week after another never-before-played-on-RSST 4(+1)-in-a-row (all Japanese cuts, btw), and live, from Argentina… The Skatalites! Bravissimo!

The Blues Busters’ cover of Baby What You Want Me to Do turned heads around here, and it led off the 1st hour this week, followed by another fave, Derriiiiiiiiiiick! We peppered the rest of Hr. 1 with everything from Toño Quirazco to Tokyo Ska to Bo Evil by The Slackers. Highlights of Sherwood’s set included more of André Popp’s Pixieland hijinks, an extended George Russell composition (Dimensions) and the coming-to-town Kid Nic Show (coming to Lee’s Tue. May 18) with the vibra-phonic Mystify. A set of 6-min.-on-up longies made up the 4@4, and the non-Roddy-related Maggie Mae delivered this week’s Lolli repeat in German/English. Jawohl!
