November 2016 Global Beat Archives

For the first hour Larry Long came in to showcase his upcoming CD release – coordinated around his 65th Birthday Celebration concert at the Cedar on Friday Nov. 11.  We talked over his career and featured many of his favorite songs before leaving – for a rehearsal at The Cedar.  Check it out !

Opening with Stevie Wonder, since he passed through the West Bank a couple weeks back – and today's show reflects on (trying to cope with?) yesterday's national presidential election result.

Opening with music of Brasil of Milton Nascimento from his Mass of the Runaway Slaves/ Missa dos Quilombos in northeast Brasil.  Along with the Paul Robeson classic "Ol' Man River' and his work collaborating with Amazonian natives as well.  Then a couple more from Anishinabeg artist, Annie Humphrey from her "Edge of America" release.  Then a few from Larry Long in honor of his birthday and new cd release before a rare John Trudell track "Fables & Other Realities".  A following set from Samiland artist Mari Boine leads back into an Afrobeat set in honor of the soon to visit Seun Kuti by

Starting off today's program with a tribute set to Leonard Cohen — then kept it going with a full blown tribute to Bob Dylan's work — as interpreted by others.  In addition to that there is a Standing Rock editorial and a couple relevant songs from John Trudell and Buffy Ste-Marie mixed in to some gospel including The Sounds of Blackness.  At the end of the program I also leave the US for a bit of foreign flavor to wrap it all up.  Thanks for your calls today — it made me feel even more grateful for Fresh Air and the opportunity to share some of my visions.

Doug is out — so Dale Loomer takes over captaining the ship for the day.  Enjoy… !
