Quite a mix of new and old for the 2nd show of 2014… Kicking off with yet another new Dubophonic Records release – the excellent “Dub Ina Midlands” from Koncrete Roots. Two new choice releases from Dubmission also making their debut tonight: the cool “Dream Before You Sleep” EP from Quanta, and the sublimely beautiful “Maya” album from the Holiwater Band. More new material from Vibration Lab (on Reggae Roast), Tour de Force (on Dub-Stuy), Riverside Rockers (on Boom One), Norris Man (on Fox Fuse), Shunya, Jesse Royal, Doozer Dubby Doo, Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub (recorded Live), and Kasm meets Seed Organization. The doctor also roped in some Dub Caravan, Dengue Dengue Dengue, John Brown’s Body, J Boog, Winston Edwards, and a nice chunk of Chicago Afrobeat Project (who played in Minneapolis on 1/11).
When Swiss took over in the middle, he bookended the second half with a couple of fine, chill Perfume tracks, one from their still fairly-new full-length Level 3, “Furikaeru to Iru Yo” and the earlier ’09 ‘b’-side “23:30” we’ve heard here before. Grooves by the likes of 60 Channels, Nitin Sawhney, Jon Hassell, Terminal Cheesecake, Jah Wobble and UB40 peppered the inbetween.
