October 2013 ECHO CHAMBER Archives

Another one of those nights where Dr. StrangeDub filled nearly 2 hours with all new material. Starting off with the new album “Dub Volume 2” from Dub Architect, followed by a new discovery – Creole & the Dub Master and their “Impress the Empress EP” (from the Echorek dub collective). More new dubwise music from Greencross & ODG, CHLLNGR & Dr. Echo, YesKing, and Bass Culture Players. On top of that was the long-awaited new album “Tales from the Frand Bazaar” from Bombay Dub Orchestra (on Six Degrees), plus more new music from Intended Immigration, Dr. Epidemic, Meta & the Cornerstones, Vernon Maytone (Buckley), DubSalon, Prince Jazzbo (on Dubbhism Deluxe), Ondatropica, Dr. Zygote, Pops Jabu, Little Axe, Sennid/Svaha Sound System, Dub Majestic, Bang Bang Boogie, Errol Bellot, and Tommy McCook & others (on the “Reggae in Jazz” release on Pressure Sounds). Filling out the show (mostly in Swiss’ 2 hours) were: TeraKaft, Zion Dirty Sound, King Tubby, Roots Tonic meets Bill Laswell, Boom Boom Satellites, Ott, Aswad, Eek-a-Mouse, Horace Andy & Deadly Headley, BDLabs, Third World All Stars, and more…

A whole boatload of new sounds on tonight’s program… Brand new releases from Red Star Martyrs (on Dubophonic), Dub Architect, Offoner (on Dan Dada), Dub Terminator & High Freequency, Noble Vibes, Bombay Dub Orchestra, The Scientist meets Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub (yes, that Scientist), Horace Andy & Grant Phabao (on Paris DJs), Karma Dub (another Dubophonic release), Jaqee, Oil City Boom Sound, Echorek, Congo Natty, Secret Archives of the Vatican, The Green (on Easy Star), Yellowman (2-CD retrospective), Babilonci, Farmer Nappy, and the various artists “Halloween at High Noon – Way of the Wicked” on High Noon. On top of that we aired a good chunk of the Dub Rockers Mixtape – Vol 1 mix (Mixed by DJ Juan Love). Rounding out the show with more great selections from King Tubby, Noodleman, YMCK, Dennis Brown, Ott, Jah Malla, Thirsty Moon, Earth Wind & Fire, Jah Thomas, YT, Chicago Afrobeat Project, and more…

Tonight as part of the KFAI fall pledge drive we revisited a theme we have not done in awhile: A Fistful of Dub: A Dread Western Special. The Echo Chamber headed out to the wild, wild west! The anchors of the show (and the two items that were the germ of the project) were Roots Control’s fantastic Dread Western album (on Wordsound) and the Ennio Morricone soundtrack to the spaghetti western movie The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Tonight’s show was dreader than dread – with some great stuff from the Halloween at High Noon series on High Noon records. Also fitting right in was the Trojan Records “western reggae” compilation “The Big Gundown”. More great stuff in the mix, including: the excellent “Return of Gringo” album from Prince Fatty meets the Mutant Hi-Fi; Vincenzo Cipollone (“Far West” album); Guvna (with “Fistful of Dub”); Dave & Ansel Collins (“Double Barrel”); Michael Rose (“Gunfighter”); “Bankrobber” from The Clash, plus the version from John Brown’s Body; Fully Fullwood (“Buffalo Cowboy”); Josie Wales, Beenie Man & Ini Kamoze (“Jungle & Western Cowboy Style”); and much, much more…

All over the map in the Echo chamber… First off, we had new releases from Ibel meets Med Dred (Love Fi Life on Dubophonic), The Manor (“Duppy Call” on Springline), Beats Antique (A Thousand Faces – Act 1), Daily Bread Dub (“In God’s Hands”), Vernon Maytone (On the Right Track on Uniteam), and Deep Fried Dub (“Slow Cooked” on Dubmission). More new stuff from Carlton Livingston/Junglist Sounds, Noble Vibes, Suns of Dub x El Toro, Roots Controlla, Jennifer Paulos & Mystic Selekta, Cortex, Luz (ft. Mestre Liminha D’ogm), and Red Star Martyrs, plus the “Halloween at High Noon – Way of the Wicked” on High Noon. Also featured a couple of Peter Tosh tracks – celebrating his 69th birthday on October 19. Then Swiss came on and filled his set with 7” singles grabbed from YouTube (including tracks by Derrick Morgan & Johnny Clarke, Cornel Campbell, and John Holt), plus some obscure tracks from the likes of Jorge & the Landladies/Victor Rice, Seiko Oomori, Contratempo, Yann Tomita, and Ga-In. Certainly a unique mix tonight…

All the ghouls, goblins, ghosts, and dreads gathered with Dr. StrangeDub & DJ Baby Swiss in the annual “Echo Chamber of Horrors!” special. And what a howling good show – with layers of special effects & soundbytes, including the movies “Dracula”, “Frankenstein”, “The Exorcist”, “Berberian Sound Studio”, and more – and tons of scary dubwise music. And what a varied cast of characters in this year’s production…including: DJ Spooky, Raz Mesinai, Tino Corp., Lou Reed, Bob Marley, Two Eye One Socket, Grace Jones, Dubblestandart (with Lee Scratch Perry), Max Romeo, Elephant Man (with Subatomic Sound), Daily Bread Dub, The Divine Sham, Mungo’s Hi-Fi, Secret Panels vs. The Assessor, Ghosts, Beats Antique, Ital Roots Players, Little Axe, Aldubb meets Big Finga, The Manor, Gorillaz, Cornell Campbell, Eating Betty, and many more…
