DJ Baby Swiss riding solo for a 2nd week (with Dr. StrangeDub sleeping after 2 days straight driving). Going for the roots classics tonight – with contributions from Lee “Scratch” Perry, The Skatalites, Augustus Pablo, Chinna Smith, King Tubby, and more. And then off to a great mix of newer releases by Jah Wobble & Deep Space, Jazzmin Tutum, Twile, Scientist vs. King Midas Sound, Little Tempo, Bandulu Dub, Volfoniq, The English Beat, Mutant Frogs, Ott, and still more.
Another crazy mix inna Echo Chamber… With The Selecter in town this week (at The Cedar), and Jimmy Cliff coming next week (to 1st Avenue), they had to be featured on tonight’s program. Also in town recently were those beautiful sister Les Nubians, so we played two by them too. And then we had a ton of new releases – including Mexican Stepper’s “The Mad Sunday EP” (on Dubophonic); Svaha Sound System’s “Roots & Branches”; Twin Cities’ own Black Market Brass; GadManDubs (dubbing Bob Marley); long-time dubmaster Trevor the Technician; Masia One & Sizzla Kalonji (with the “Freedom” anthem); Eljai; Attack Released & Joseph Cotton; MatDTSound; and Jahdan Blakkamoore/Illuminati Congo. Rounding out the crazy mix with The Etherealites, UB40, The Pinstripes, Wareika, Dub Syndicate, Komodo, Groove Corporation, Kukan Dub Lagan, Cabernet Deneuve, Clive Hunt & the Dub Dancers, Naaman, and more…
A very special evening as we celebrated KFAI’s 35th Birthday; played a tribute set for the late great Prince Jazzbo; and had the pleasure of airing a special Bandulu Dub Echo Chamber Exclusive Mix! Kicked off the party / pledge drive with the fun “Happy Birth Dub” from Soldier Red & Lion Army. Some great new tunes this week from Brain Damage meets Vibronics (from the soon to be released “Empire Soldiers” album on Jarring Effects), Jaqee (from her new “Yes I Am” album), Victoria Moralez, Secret Archives of the Vatican, MatDTSound, Dubsalon, Alific, HIRIE, The Expendables ft. Eek-A-Mouse, and Dub Caravan. The tribute to Prince Jazzbo included the brand-new What A Tribulation track (+ dub) he did with the Dubbhism Deluxe crew; the great “Ease Up the Pressure” done with Dubmatix; the fantastic “Black Shadow” done with Dub Club; the sublime showcase track “Most Dangerous Man/Free Up Yu Mind” done with Eric Blowtorch & the Welders; and finally an old Studio One Jazzbo cut entitled “Takeover Dub”.
Flying solo this week due to the good Dr.‘s bad cold (in commemoration of which d.j. babyswiss spun his Mutant Frogs track “Big Bad Rhino” twice back-to-back, the first time as a bumper), The Cheese broadcast from orbit around Titan this week, and those tuned in got to hear a cut from Ott’s debut album Blumenkraft, the first time we’ve spun anything by him that wasn’t from Hallucinogen In Dub. We really “Ott-a” dig into this guy’s back-catalogue; it’s exactly the kinda stuff this show’s made of! By the way, we just missed yet another of his TC appearances… Swiss has gOTTa keep an eye peeled (Ewww, gross!) for future Ott gigs. Celestial bodies The Sun and Io got to be back-announce bumpers… we’re gonna have to do more of that! Lotsa rootical “showcase discomix” business figured into the playlist this week, as did a bunch of impossibly rare 45 dubs and toasts Swiss found on YouTube some years back, many by various collections of “All Stars” named after their record labels. And for those puzzling over the name “Earth Wind & Fire” listed as the track rather than the artist, …it’s not a mistake, it’s Paul Blackman’s 12” on the UK’s Daddy Kool label, itself also the home of Chap. 3 of Prince Far-I’s “Cry Tuff Dub Encounter” series. Look for the good Doctor to join in the fun next week, and in the meantime… wish him well.
