With DJ Baby Swiss out of town on a gig, Dr. StrangeDub went solo for 4 hours of dubwise fun. And it sure was fun to debut the new Echo Chamber – Around the World in Dub – Vol. 3 & 4 compilation album tonight! For the summer mix the doctor pulled out a great mix from 2011 put together by Eating Betty (our friend Mel) for Echo Beach (WLUW-FM, Chicago). On top of this we aired great new tunes from Dubagroova, Rocker-T, The Breadwinners (ft. Stally), Tricky, Masia One, The Fellow Traveller, Dubtonic Kru, Chucho Valdes & the Afro-Cuban Messengers, Robert Ziino, Blue King Brown, Mykal Rose, Science Project, Dax Lion, Byutifu!, Queendigo Placid Jazz, Dub-I/Fire Salad, Patko, Kobo Town, and Vieux Farka Toure! More great dubs and such from: Dubor & the Duborians, Clement Weda, Dub Specialist, Sly & The Revolutionaries, Scientist, Citizen Sound, Longman, Big Shiny, Dubsalon ft. Razaman, Third World Allstars, and may more. To get your free digital download of “Echo Chamber – Around the World in Dub – Vol. 3 & 4” on Dan Dada Records (Thanks Bruno!), as well as Vol, 1 & 2, come here.
Cruising in the middle of summer with a great mix of old and new, dubwise and otherwise. Kicked things of with the excellent 2009 release “From Far East” by Killa Sista from Japan (featuring Makiko, AKASkunkin’ Mau), followed by a track from Makiko (on the Vibronics’ Scoops label). After this came the choice new “Guetto Roots of Dub – Vol. 1” album (on Dubophonic) from Negritage out of Argentina. And 3rd up from the UK was the “lost album” from Errol Bellot – recorded back in the 1980s and finally released by Reggae Archive Records with the title “Youthman – The Lost Album”. Another highlight of tonight’s show was the very cool new album Uncut by O. De Lanzac (on BBE Records), along with her Mixcloud mix called “Summer Breezin’”. More new tunes in the mix from: Dubtonic Kru, Zion Dirty Sound, Fumitake Uchida, Dub Majestic & Bandulu Dub. To highlight 2 of the top artists at this year’s Bayfront Reggae Fest (in Duluth, MN) we featured tracks from Everton Blender and Richie Spice; and to promote their upcoming gig in Minneapolis, we played some Meditations and our good friends Irie Sol. Finally, rounding out the show (and commemorating Roswell), the lineup included A Tribe Called Red, Raisa K, Dubagroova, AMJ Dub Collective, Omars Attacks, Jah Wobble & Deep Space, Little Tempo, Doctor Echo, Tommy McCook & the Supersonics (in dub), Sun Ra & the Intergalactic Solar Arkestra, and more…
Tonight we headed to the moon…and off into space as part of our annual “Lunar Lunatics” special commemorating the first moon landing on July 20, 1969. The lunacy included moon-related tracks like: “Renegade Moon”, “Man In the Moon”, “Mellowmoon”, “Black Moon”, “Walking on the Moon”, and “Lunar Base Dub”, and more space-oriented titles such as “Waltz from Outer Space”, “Spaced Out Babylonians”, “Jumping Jupiter”, and “Skankworks in Orbit”. And what a far-out mix of artists tonight: Green Fandango, Mayd Hubb & Joe Pilgrim, Banco de Gaia, The Orb & Lee Scratch Perry, Marcello Giombini, Ken Nordine, Full Moon Scientist, Uffe, Colonel Elliott & the Lunatics, Twile, Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra, and many more… Truly an out-of-this-world dubwise journey.
Celebrating and highlighting three excellent record labels and some of their recent releases tonight. First off, the new Dubophonic netlabel just released their 3rd album and it is excellent — Zion Dirty Sound’s “Fils d’Abraham”. From African and Middle-Eastern sounds, to Cumbia, Reggae, and of course Dub, this album has it all….and it flows so nicely. Secondly, we debuted the new “Foundation Come Again” by Dub Club on Stones Throw Records. Brand new recordings of original tracks by reggae legends Big Youth, Prince Jazzbo, Josey Wales, Dillinger, Trinity, Lone Ranger, and more, pulled together by the Dub Club team of Tom Chasteen & Tippa Lee. Finally, we shined a light on the cool Boom One Records and featured 5 tracks, including the latest “Naw Give Up” from the Boom One Sound System and featuring General Coldhand. On top of this, we included a righteous rootical mix from Brian UncleFee Blackharmony entitled “Bullwackies Reggae Goodies Vol 2”. And finally, we continued our travels in outer space…following up our “Lunar Lunatics” special from last week.
The final show of July…and what an ending to our annual “space month”. New music from Chicago Afrobeat Project (who were just in town with special guest Tony Allen), Talisman, earlyW~Rm, Dubology, The Cat Empire (also in town recently), Ramon Judah & Conscious Sound, Dub Club (ft. Natty King & King Stitt), Righteous Dub (dubbing GPGDS), Greg Dubamix, Taj Weekes & Adowa (live), Zion Dirty Sound, Dub Conscious, Piper St. Sound, International Observer, and Doctah X. On top of this we aired Dr. StrangeDub’s interview of the incredible Brazilian guitarist/singer/songwriter Badi Assad, plus several of her songs. Rounding out the show with one more space-oriented set, plus a few other things from the likes of: Ital Roots Players, Radiola Dub Sound System, Tipsy, The Clash, The Dropsteppers, Little Tempo, Easy Star All Stars, Owen Gray, Scientist, Ramsey Lewis (& Earth Wind & Fire), Derrick Morgan, and more.
