Summer rolls on with another show filled with new dub. Although it came out late in 2010, tonight was the debut of Bill Laswell’s latest Method of Defiance album Jahbulon. Another great new release was the Digital Showcase from U-Rie and Neblina Sound. Also new tonight: Ghosts Outside from Steve Mason Dennis Bovell, plus new stuff from Bassnectar Seth Drake, Alpha Steppa, Grace Jones, Mista Majah P, Roots of Rebellion, and more… On top of this was half of a special Properly Chilled Mix done especially for Echo Beach (WLUW-FM, Chicago). Finally, Swiss introduced us to a fine Finnish outfit called The Valkyrians with their track Taikonaut Reggae, and added more cool tunes from Tsuyoshi Kawakami, Raw Vibes, The Dualers, and Burning Spear among others.
Another ton of new dub and other funky music tonight – including Rolling Lion Studio’s House of Dread (Renegade Media); Playing For Change’s PFC2; and more from 11 Acorn Lane, Baby Arm Sound System, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant, Jesse Royal, Dubkasm, Yabass, Amenta, Nakedi, Luisa Maita, Grace Jones, A Man Called PJ, Digitaldubs, and more. Also tonight, a short mix featuring Pale Rider and Phase Selector Sound System. And another short ON-U Sound mix featuring Little Axe, Creation Rebel, and Singers Players.
As usual, something for everybody in the Echo Chamber…starting off with a cool new dub from Ital Roots Players, followed by new music from The Angel, I.vette, Process Rebel, Juakali, Copia Doble Systema, Mahom, and Easy Star All Stars. As part of our summer mix series we included an excellent mix from Saetchmo called Short Trip Into Space and Back.
When Swiss took over in the 4:00 hour, listeners found out why It’s Fun To Listen To YMCK…and their cheesy-cute 8-bit video arcade chiptune/dancehall (“chiphall?”) riddim “Collect The Wind – Happy End”, kicking off a set that reintroduces the world to Grace Jones via her new “Hurricane/Hurricane Dub” dubble CD. Also in the set, new artist (to us) Diva, along with Rico, Tsuyoshi Kawakami and Dub Syndicate.
The highlight of tonight’s show was a double dose of great new reggae from ROIR: 10 Ft. Ganja Plant’s “Shake Up the Place” and from Brazil, Digitaldub’s “#1”. To celebrate these releases on ROIR, along with Kevin Kinsella’s brand new “Great Design”, we did an extended ROIR set. Straight from today’s headlines, we debuted the new “London’s Burning” from Big Youth (produced by Mad Professor on Ariwa). And from the upcoming Earthshaker 3 album, The Technician dropped the heavy “Liquefaction Dub” on the Echo Chamber massive.
The Echo Chamber 15th Anniversary Extravaganza! The TurnTableTerrorist (Terry C) joined Dr. StrangeDub and DJ Baby Swiss for this special historic and crazy dubwise program. Covering 15 years in a 3 hours is impossible, but we did our best to represent our history – hitting some of the best labels (like ON-U Sound, Wordound, ROIR, Echo Beach, Trojan) and including many of our best dubwise friends and essential artists: Dub Syndicate, Pale Rider, Eating Betty, Trevor “The Technician”, The Angel/60 Channels, Mad Professor, Sly & Robbie, Jah Wobble, Volfoniq, Madtone, Jazz’min Tutum, Victoria Moralez, All India Radio, LKJ, Twilight Circus, Version Big-Fi, Dubmatix, The Pepper Pots, King Tubby, and many more… What a long strange trip it’s been….so far.
