Another show filled with a whole lot great new music. Starting things out with a Natural Dub Cluster track from the new Italian Dub Community – Showcase Vol. 3 compilation. Followed this up Secret Archives of the Vatican’s heavy new Barbary Lion and the self-titled release by See-I (on Fort Knox). More great new music from Copia Doble Systema, Kevin Kinsella, Don Corleon, Bandulu Dub, Longman, and more. The Swiss set kicked off in high style by debuting some fresh new Tokyo Jihen (Dai Hakken’s leadoff track), and mixing that into a dancehall goodie from Ari Up’s swan song Slits release Trapped Animal. Old-schoolers Jamaica Super Dub, Jackie Mittoo and Adrian Sherwood helped round out hour 3 in fine style.
Heavy new sounds from Sylford Walker & McPullish, Marlon Asher & Leah Rosier, and Dub Gabriel & MC Zulu. Also some great new stuff from Kevin Kinsella (on his “Great Design” solo release on ROIR); Seun Anikulapo Kuti & Egypt 80 (with Brian Eno, Justin Adams, & John Reynolds); and A Man Called PJ. Swiss’ set, as it progressed, morphed into a mini-Free The Weed hour, with tracks from Glen Brown, Peter Broggs, Barrington & Beenie, and Children of the Bong.
A special show tonight as we aired part 2 of the 5th annual “Around the World in 20+ Dubs” (originally aired 4/29 on Echo Beach at WLUW-FM, Chicago). But, before the ATW 20+ special mix, we started things off with Taj Weekes & Adowa in advance of their upcoming MPLS show (6/14 – 7th St Entry) & their upcoming appearance at the Bayfront Reggae Festival (7/17 – Duluth,MN). Followed up with Nkulee Dube, who will also be at the Bayfront Fest (7/16) from her new album “My Way”.
DJ Baby Swiss entered hour 3 smelling like a rose… in addition to 2 spritzes of Perfume, the ol’ time travel machine named After Hours took us back to ‘Round Midnight, Omars Attacked, firing strawberries from a white black hole in outer space, a Mouse unwrapped a snap bar somewhere on Mars, Yello dubbed in a tub, and Hugh Cornwell sprung a gingerbread girl from prison and spirited her away to an opium den… all in the Echo Chamber.
Tonight we debuted the new Kevin Kinsella album “Great Design” (out on ROIR 6/28) – an excellent, eclectic mix of reggae, alt-folk, and rock. Also new tonight: the “Fire In The Hole Meets Zion Train” EP (Universal Egg); “General Smiley meets McPullish at Dub Cove” (Charlie’s); and more from Prince Blanco, AB2G, Lee “Scratch” Perry (with Bill Laswell), Jaja Matsimela, and Turban.
Talk about a ton of new music! Tonight we premiered the excellent ambient/electro “The Marginal Rules” from Master Margherita, and played new material from Mungo’s Hi-Fi, Copia Doble Systema, Longman, Webcam Hi-Fi, Kevin Kinsella, Don Corleon, See-I, Utivo Provisor, Bandulu Dub meets Pop-I, Heavy Tin, Miracle Fortress, and I.vette. There was also the new compilation “Wadada presents Pass It On chap. 1”. Finally, we kicked off the summer mix series with the Elemental Dubs Mix from Culture Cuts.
