2/2/2013 Rhythm and Grooves

A day of music that’s been out for a while, including Cassandra Wilson from 2002, Gordon Johnson from 2004, Allen Toussaint from 2008, Lynne Arriale from 2005, and Nicholas Payton from 1996. Didn’t forget older music from the likes of Hank Crawford & Jimmy McGriff, Monk, MIles, Tadd Dameron, and Sonny Stitt. Played both sides of the 45 of the week: Body & Soul/Stompin’ At the Savoy, by the Gene Krupa Trio.

I was visited today by singer Katie Gearty and choreographer/director Regina Peluso, who talked about the Jazz Ballet, Go A Lot of Living to Do, at the Southern Theater. We talked about the ballet and played some of the songs that Katie Sings in it. Also spent time playing music from New Orleans, in celebration of Mardis Gras, including tunes by the New Orleans Collective, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong, the Dirty Dozen, James Andrews, Astral Project, and Jim Robinson. A couple of songs to remember the recently passed Donald Byrd, and that was the show.
