Poet Marilyn Nelson stopped by to read some of her poems about the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, an all-female big band of the 40s. Turned out to be an evening of female performers as I played tunes from Sheryl Bailey, Sharie Maricle, Tiny Davis, Mary Lou Williams, Laura Caviani, and more… * + New, # = Twin Cities Artist
A mixed bag of music for this evening, from the opener of Jimmy McGriff doing an Al Green tune, to new music from Christian Scott, Brazilian music from Kenia, and great tunes from the Stein Brothers, Dexter Gordon, Dinah Washington, and more…
A Good portion of the show was dedicated to the music of Hank Jones, who passed over on Sunday. I played music where he was a member of the band, led the band, and a few examples of him as an accompanist for singers like Nancy Wilson, JOhnny Hartman, and Abbey Lincoln.
Davina the Vagabonds came by and performed 5 songs. It was awesome, if I do say so myself. I also played tunes by Lester Young, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Sonny Rollins John Coltrane, Dave Holland, Eric Alexander, and Tessa Souter.
