Travis from The Boys n’ the Barrels came in this morning to talk about bluegrass music, creating songs with friends and their big show at the Cabooze June 5th. It’s been fun to see the band grow and develop since 2009, and it’s even more fun to hear about their busy upcoming festival season and to know it means we’ll hear more from this band for a long time to come. We also heard new music this morning from local blues/satire artist Nigel Egg, local afrobeat purveyors Black Market Brass and Conor Oberst in advance of his show at First Avenue.

New music this morning from Trampled By Turtles (the new one, “Wild Animals,” is out July 15th), Shonen Knife (coming to town in September) and Doug Otto & Hurricane Harold (recorded in one take). Check the playlist and you’ll find Ethiopian-born artist Meklit, Petra Haden accapella-style covering The Who, Nordic music from around the millenium and more local music than you can swing a cat (thanks, Jack Klatt) at mixed in!

Thanks to Ellen from “Womenfolk” for joining me in the last hour of the show this morning to celebrate all the great moments we’ve had together over the years on PWB: some of the great interviews she’s helped arrange for the show, great artists she’s prompted me to share and the fun we’ve had on pledge drives. I’ll still pop up on her excellent show when she’ll let me…and we might co-host another “Crap from the Past” one of these Fridays…. We also heard new music this morning from Rebirth Brass Band, Bob Bingham and a crazy new offering from the Red Hot organization: “Red Hot + Bach”—very very cool collection of artists bringing their musical voices to Bach compositions to raise funds for AIDS/HIV prevention.
