We enjoyed a visit from Brian Laidlaw this morning to talk about his new ep with The Family Trade, “Whiskey with Goliath.” Shoot—he told us there’s a story behind the name but we ran out of time to hear it! We talked about his love of words, his ode to a friend who drops malapropisms, and his upcoming very-cool-sounding project merging his love of Dylan with the industrial and cultural history of Hibbing (funded in part by a MN State Arts Board grant).

We “celebrated” Valentine’s Day today with the Rejection Day Counter-Valentine’s Day Special—all songs of rejection, chosen with love by special guest Jeff Bragg and me.

We welcomed Mother Banjo this morning in advance of her February 28th show at Ginkgo with Moors & McCumber. We talked about her new gospel record “The Devil Hasn’t Won,” multi-instrumentalist Tim O’Brien, and crediting the new record to Mother Banjo Band—a nod to the solid group of musicians with whom she recorded and often performs. We also heard the new Robben Ford and Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite.

We had a nice phone chat with Lucy Kaplansky this morning; she will join Claudia Schmidt and Heather Masse at the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium Friday, March 1st, for a special Women of Red House 30th Anniversary concert.
