April 2012 Archives

New music this morning from Irvin Mayfield, Jr.'s "A Love Letter to New Orleans," L'Assassins, and Michigan-based songwriter Drew Nelson. Check the playlist for more!

This morning we heard new local music from I Like You, new music out of funky Austin, TX, band Brownout, and Steve Martin Banjo award-winning players The Punch Brothers.

New releases we heard this morning include fresh new female-fronted local group L'Assassins, something sweet and light just out from Martin Sexton, and we're hitting the Brownout "Oozy" pretty hard because it's been Monday each Monday of the week for a little bit now. Check the playlist for more eclectic new and local releases!

Thanks to Xan Aranda for sharing her film about Andrew Bird with us this morning. "Fever Year" screened as part of the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival and chronicled a year of filming Andrew Bird on tour, which also happened to be a year where he was gravely ill most of the time. The film catches some beautiful live performances of music from the album "Break It Yourself." Because Aranda is a friend of Bird's, the film also allows a closer look at an artist in process. Look out for Aranda's next intimate work: "Mormons Make Movies," which features her grandparents.

We welcomed Ben Cook-Feltz to the studio to talk about the concert series he co-hosts with Brandon of Art Vandalay at the Beat Coffeehouse, Songwriters & Storytellers. This means we heard a lot of local music and catchy melodies in the 11:00 hour. We also heard new music from Dr. John and Father John Misty. Check the playlist for more!
