We started the show with a new track from Kae Sun, born in Ghana and living in Toronto (his new EP is available as a free download here), heard a set of Bachata from the Domincan Republic and some great Nigerian reissues, plus music from Kenya, Uganda, Cape Verde and points beyond with Brad, Jojo and Charlie.

Along with new music from Brasileiras Marisa Monte and Maria Rita and a tribute to Barry Llewellyn and The Heptones in the first hour, we spent the second hour of today’s African Rhythms surveying the breadth of music from contemporary African female singers including Cesaria Evora, Souad Massi and Dobet Gnahore.

It was the Winter Solstice edition of African Rhythms with new music from Malamanya and Michael Kiwanuka, a set of blistering Cumbia from Colombia and a tribute to Cesaria Evora.
