On this edition of African Rhythms: new music from Hindi Zahra (Paris via Morocco) and Tendai “Baba” Maraire (Zimbabwe via USA, Shabazz Palaces), a look at Congolese music, new and vintage, and its Cuban influences, and much more with Brad, Jojo and Deborah.
We started the show with a new track from Kae Sun, born in Ghana and living in Toronto (his new EP is available as a free download here), heard a set of Bachata from the Domincan Republic and some great Nigerian reissues, plus music from Kenya, Uganda, Cape Verde and points beyond with Brad, Jojo and Charlie.
Along with new music from Brasileiras Marisa Monte and Maria Rita and a tribute to Barry Llewellyn and The Heptones in the first hour, we spent the second hour of today’s African Rhythms surveying the breadth of music from contemporary African female singers including Cesaria Evora, Souad Massi and Dobet Gnahore.
