A heady mix of music and conversation on today’s edition of African Rhythms with Jojo, Charlie and Brad. Musical highlights included deep cuts from Ernesto Djédjé (Ivory Coast), Dele Sosimi (Nigeria) and Gidi Gidi Maji Maji (Kenya) with some ringers thrown in (Sugar Minott, The Special AKA, etc.).
Joni Haastrup’s take on psychedelic Afro-rock with his Nigerian band Monomono (and later as a solo artist) is the focus of three stellar new reissues from Soundway/Tummy Touch. On today’s African Rhythms we heard a couple of tracks from those records, along with new music from Congo courtesy of Damon Albarn’s new DNC Music project pairing Western producers with contemporary Congolese musicians.
