October 2016 Malarkey-Radio with an Irish Accent Archives

Loma Mor's Ceili at the Celtic Junction. 3rd Saturday of each month. Small admission fee. Live music and dance instruction.

Tonight, we depart a little from the usual Malarkey format and talk about things we do not often talk about. Ireland had, and still has, it's own minority. The Traveling People was one name for them. Other names were "Tinkers," "Travelers," and in England, "pavees" or "pikeys" In the USA they are known for the state they normally reside in such at Texas Travelers, Georgia Travelers and so on.  Around 10,000 US Travelers are genetically Irish – being descendants of Travellers who left Ireland during the Great Famine between 1845 and 1860.
