5/13/2008 Dig Up The Roots

Music as an endangered species as Hugh Tracy, a pioneering Ethnomusicologist, said about what he sought to record. This show jumped around between African musicians influenced by Jazz and Rhumbas from The U.S. and Cuba. Music that was heard from merchant sailors soldiers bringing records and guitars (instead of disease and chaos) to new places and eager new ears. Radio waves were spreading across the globe and the world was migrating to the crumbling seats of Empire.

As the blues and country music influenced each other while remaining distinct, so did South African Vaudville (Mirabi) remain unique and vibrant while growing stronger by bringing in the influence of US Jazz. 1950's Guitar music from Kenya heavily influced by Cuban Rhumba and Son recordings from the 1920's. Those pieces that make the question marks dance above your head are heard as well like the jazz version of The Colonel Bogey March (Siqonda Emaqusw) from Southern Rhodesia which would be featured about a decade later in the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. The tune was popular with the local police marching bands. A South African Vaudville recording from 1930 with Hawaiin guitar and Hillbilly style yodeling. Globel culture at it's best or worst?

The middle of the show featured two discs from a series called 'London Is The Place For Me', music from the African and Caribbean diasporas, recorded in the 1950's 60's. Cool stuff. We also heard some Jamaican mento from the early 1950's.
