Dr. Clifford Canku First Person Radio12/11/2013
Please join Laura Waterman Wittstock on Wednesday, December 11 as we move toward the time of year when we remember 38 Dakota patriots who were executed in Mankato, Minnesota and 265 who were imprisoned in Davenport, Iowa under the most punishing conditions. She talks with Dr. Clifford Canku who with Michael Simon wrote "The Dakota Prisoner of War Letters: Dakota Kaskapi Okicize Wowapi" published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press. The letters, translated by the authors, reveal the prolonged agony of warriors denied treatment as prisoners of war and instead treated like criminals without any rights whatsoever. Dr. Canku is fluent in Dakota and provides these transcriptions to the public for the first time.
Dr. Clifford Canku is an assistant professor of Dakota studies at North Dakota State University. He is a co-author of Beginning Dakota and the Beginning Dakota Teacher’s Edition.
We will also have a brief remembrance of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, born July 18, 1918 at Mveso, Transkei, South Africa. Walked on December 5, 2013.
