Mara discusses some of the struggles of the transgender movement and how people can help support human rights for transgender people

Mara Keisling is the founding Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. Mara is a transgender-identified woman and a parent. As one of the nation’s leading voices for transgender equality, Mara has appeared on news outlets and is regularly quoted in hundreds of national and local print and broadcast media.

Since NCTE was founded in 2003, the organization was part of coalition efforts that have won significant advances in transgender equality. NCTE Issues "Our Moment for Reform: Transgender People and Immigration," a Groundbreaking Report Outlining Key Failings of U.S. Immigration System for Transgender People.

 

Reverend Mark Kiyimba, Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Kampala, Uganda

The Unitarian Universalist Association of Uganda

Rev. Mark Kiyimba is the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Kampala, Uganda. He runs a housing program for orphans of HIV victims, HIV+ youth and homeless LGBTI youth. He opposes the current iteration of the anti-gay law now in parliament, and has organized yearly conferences with other faith leaders calling for an end to violence and hatred against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. In 2012 Rev. Kiyimba received the National Education Assocation (NEA) Virginia Uribe Award for Creative Leadership in Human Rights.

God Loves Uganda (2013), Roger Ross Williams director

The feature-length documentary God Loves Uganda is a powerful exploration of the evangelical campaign to change African culture with values imported from America’s Christian Right. God Loves Uganda premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18th, 2013 and has won numerous awards at film festivals so far. The film serves as a catalyst for change, through our upcoming international screening tour and social action campaign.

'God Loves Uganda' film screening Friday, November 1 at All God's Children Metropolitan Community Church, 3100 Park Avenue S, Minneapolis. Doors open at 7PM and the screening will promptly begin at 7:30PM. Join the post screening discussion with guest panelists: Rev. Mark Kiyimba from Uganda & David Weiss (The Uganda Project)
