Host Laura Waterman Wittstock talks with Miguel Vargas in the KFAI studios about the Dakota 38 + 2 ride as the horses and riders arrive in Mankato, Minnesota and a sculpture is dedicated on the 150th anniversary of the hanging of 38 Dakota patriots. The extreme cold reminds those in attendance of the suffering the prisoners underwent as they waited for execution. Runners from Fort Snelling ran the 83 miles from St. Paul to Mankato in remembrance of the forced marches to imprisonment from Dakota territories to an area below the fort. During imprisonment, hundreds of children, women, and elder men died from exposure and starvation. Waterman Wittstock was in Mankato and Vargas was in the studio. This is a show not to be missed.
