Celebrating  Pioneer Composers Pauline Oliveros' 80th Birthday & John Cage's 100th

Join Host Dixie Treichel on Thursday August 30, 2012 from 7pm-8pm  for a tribute to these two innovative composers/performers. I will be playing their music plus ending the show with a live improvisation playing turntables, cassettes, CDs, portable radio, found objects and misc sounds.

Pauline Oliveros (born May 30, 1932) is a composer, accordianist and improvisor who is a major figure in contemporary American music.  Her career spans over fifty years of boundary dissolving music making with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. She was a founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s, and served as its director. She has taught music at Mills College, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Oliveros has written books, formulated new music theories and investigated new ways to focus attention on music, including her concepts of "Deep Listening" and sonic awareness. Founder of the Deep Listening Institute, Pauline Oliveros describes Deep Listening as a way of listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing. She received the 2012 John Cage Award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, 2010 William Schuman Award, honored in 1985 with a retrospective at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Pauline lives in Kingston, NY with her wife Ione.  http://www.paulineoliveros.ushttp://deeplistening.org

John Cage  (September 5, 1912 – August 12, 1992) was an American composer, performer, music theorist, writer, and artist. He was pioneer of indeterminacy in music, non-standard use of musical instruments, music concrete, and electroacoustic music. He also experimented with tape recorders, record players, and radios Critics have lauded him as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. He was also instrumental in the development of modern dance, mostly through his association with choreographer Merce Cunningham, who was also Cage's romantic partner for most of their lives. Through his studies of Indian philosophy and Zen Buddhism in the late 1940s, Cage came to the idea of aleatoric or chance-controlled music, which he started composing in 1951. In 1952, at Black Mountain College, he presented a theatrical event considered by many to have been the first Happening. Cage was the recipient of many awards and honors, beginning in 1949 with a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Award from the National Academy of Arts and Letters for having extended the boundaries of music through his work with percussion orchestra and his invention in 1940 of the prepared piano. http://johncage.org/
