Please join Laura Waterman Wittstock on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, as she talks with members of the Mashkiki Ogichidaag (Medicine Warriors) project of the Division of Indian in Minneapolis.
Youth participants in the program have spent the summer working on anti-commercial tobacco smoking by producing video public service announcements.
Tiana LaPointe, a Native artist with a film production background, has been working all summer with the youth to create two new PSAs. “They really took on the leadership for the project,” she said. “They worked in front and behind the camera, and were in charge of their own shoots.”
The summer program is the second phase of an initiative which focuses on cultural values and traditional strengths to help the Native youth become policy change advocates. Earlier, they produced four videos, which they used in community presentations and aired on YouTube. They also created an online petition to make it easier for people to show support for their anti-commercial tobacco stand.
