Home ›Melvin Lee Houston on the Dakota Legacy of Survival
Please join Laura Waterman Wittstock on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, as she talks with Melvin Lee Houston, Santee Sioux, and the Legacy of Survival, taking place August 16-17, 2012, commemorating 150 years of Dakota Exile from Minnesota 1862-2012. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune features a series of articles on the anniversary of the Dakota War.
It is entitled, "In the Footsteps of Little Crow." Little Crow's name is Thaóyate Dúta (His Red Nation).
The Legacy of Survival includes a camp at the Flandreau Santee Sioux Nation, South Dakota, and a Welcome Home Dakota Exiles Walk to Pipestone on Friday, August 17. The walkers will return to the Pipestone Quarry for ceremonies and a feast.
We will also feature an interview with Tamara St. John, tribal archivist for the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. She has studied Dakota history and genealogy and the 1862 war. She’s in Minneapolis this week for a conference bringing together Dakota people from all over the Midwest and Canada to share their traditions and stories around the 150 year anniversary observance of the US / Dakota War of 1862.
