Short Film Inspires Inclusion Effort

There are plenty of arts performance events to attend in the Twin Cities area, and often you’ll find American Sign Language interpreters translating for hearing impaired audiences.

Film director and actor Maya Washington thinks more could be done to include deaf audiences and performers in the arts mainstream.

She directed an award winning short film called “White Space”, which features Ryan Lane portraying a deaf poet at a spoken word event.   The film has been honored with several awards, including one at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, and it has sparked creation of the White Space Poetry Project, which Maya Washington leads.

She talked with KFAI’s Mike Fischbein about why she started the White Space Poetry Project.
