U Students Question Diversity Commitment
April 21, 2014
The University of Minnesota describes its efforts to encourage equity and diversity as being critical to campus culture and climate. But two student groups claim the University is only engaging in a marketing and PR campaign around diversity that lacks seriousness.
“Whose Diversity” and “Students for a Democratic Society” say demographic under representation, racial profiling and racism are continuing problems that need to be addressed.
KFAI’s Jumondeh Tweh recently talked about the U's diversity commitment with Assistant Vice President for Equity and Diversity, Dr. Shakeer Abdullah. He also had a conversation with five representatives from the two groups challenging the University - Students for a Democratic Society members Matt Boynton and Stephanie Taylor, and “Whose Diversity” members Joanna Nunez, Rahsaan Mahadeo and Idalia Robles.
