Minneapolis Utilities

Later this week, the Minneapolis City Council will consider a proposal to put a question on next November’s city-wide ballot, asking residents if the city should consider taking over its electric and gas utilities. The question comes up at a time when Minneapolis is set to re-negotiate contracts with Xcel Energy for electricity and Centerpoint Energy for gas service.
The idea that the city could get into the utility business has drawn opposition and support.  Both were in evidence two weeks ago when the council held a public hearing on the topic.
