Collective Eye Hosts, Judy Chaikin, Director of "The Girls In The Band" - Saturday, April 21st
April 20, 2012
Award-winning Film Director, Judy Chaikin, joins the Collective Eye on Saturday, April 21st to share highlights of her film appearing in the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival.
The Girls in the Band tells the story of female musicians struggling to break into the male-dominated world of jazz and big band from the 1930’s to the present. Through a combination of old film reels, photographs, newspaper articles, and interviews with the many musicians who fought daily against the prejudices of this sexist industry, we see the many ways these artists were both marginalized and able to persevere. In covering such a large time span, Chaikin connects the success enjoyed by many of today’s female musicians with the barriers the original jazz artists had to first break through.
Women in jazz will be featured on Saturday's edition of the Collective Eye. Bring your listening ears and dancing shoes to the radio at noon!
