Women and Children's March
November 11, 2011
By Allison Herrera
This week marks the 149th anniversary of the forced march of Dakota, men, women and children from the Upper Sioux agency in the Minnesota River valley to Fort Snelling. To commemorate this tragic event, descendants of those who were forced to leave their homes in the aftermath of the Dakota Conflict of 1862 re-create the 150 mile journey through Mankato and into fort Snelling. KFAI’s Allison Herrera joined the marchers last year outside of New Ulm and made this report.
