Bob Feldman was known across North America as a tireless music promoter and record producer who devoted his life to building and enhancing the careers of many of today's finest roots music artists—Greg Brown, Lucy Kaplansky, Spider John Koerner, Guy Davis, The Wailin' Jennys and recent Grammy nominee Eliza Gilkyson. He had incredible instincts and an ear for recognizing true musical talent, always providing sage advice to artists as to how they could grow their music and their careers. Unlike many in the industry, however, Bob allowed artists on his label ample creative control over their work. Not coincidentally, he maintained close personal relationships with many of the musicians on the label. Bob acted as a friend, fan, and business partner to many Red House artists—a combination rarely found between artists and the record executives with whom they do business. A true music lover, Bob was always eager to share his favorite songs with others. He hosted the weekly program Urban Folk for over 15 years on KFAI Community Radio in Minneapolis and was a frequent guest on Minnesota Public Radio's The Morning Show. After battling several illnesses, Bob Feldman died suddenly on January 11, 2006.
On behalf of all those touched by Bob's life and work, producers Prudence Johnson, Marian Moore and Marge Ostroushko stepped forward to present this evening of music.
