Forty-four men have served as President of the United States, though none hail from Minnesota. In this MinneCulture documentary, KFAI legacy producer Ahndi Fridell profiles six local politicians who left a mark on national history in their run for the White House: Ignatius Donnelly, Floyd Olson, Harold Stassen, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy and Walter Mondale.

Immigrants rights supporters followed Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer to a fundraiser in Columbia Heights on Wednesday, June 16. About 40 people gathered in front of Historic Heights Bed and Breakfast to draw attention to Emmer’s support of Arizona’s anti-immigration legislation, also known as SB 1070. KFAI News Director Ahndi Fridell reports.

DFL gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton announced his running mate today. Dayton selected Yvonne Prettner-Solon, who currently represents Duluth in the State senate. KFAI’s Marty Owings brings us more on the story from the Capitol.

The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved Mayor R.T. Rybak’s nomination of Velma Korbel as Director of the City of Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights last month. Korbel previously served as commissioner of the State of Minnesota Department of Human Rights. She begins her new job June 1, and spoke to Elena Erofeeva at KFAI’s West Bank Studio.

In St. Paul, voters approved Instant Runoff Voting for future city elections 52% to 47%.

120 people from the United States and Canada crossed the border into Mexico with humanitarian aid to challenge the Obama administration’s restriction on travel to Cuba. Minneapolis resident Greg Clavey is one of four Twin Cities residents taking part in this mission. Clavey is making his second trip to Cuba with the organization Pastors for Peace.

While the Obama Administration continues to push lawmakers for health care reform legislation, U.S. Representative Betty McCollum held a hearing on July 20, 2009, at the state capitol to hear what Minnesota patients, practitioners, and hospital and clinic administrators need from national health care reform.
