Novelist David Housewright joins us to talk about Jelly’s Gold, the latest in his series about Twin Cities P.I. Mac McKenzie.
In the second half of the show, we talk with University of Minnesota professor Timothy Brennan about his book Secular Devotion: Afro-Latin Music and Imperial Jazz. It’s a fascinating exploratioon that posits that popular music of the Americas—the music of entertainment, nightlife, and leisure—is involved in a devotion to an African religious worldview that survived the ravages of slavery and found its way into the rituals of everyday listening.
