Believe it or not, the season of Mardi Gras is upon us and today we celebrate it in a big way. We’ll listen to music from New Orleans, Lake Charles, Shreveport, Crowley and other Louisiana bastions of groove. And, we’ll celebrate Allen Toussaint’s 72nd birthday. During the 7 o’clock hour, we’ll pause to remember the remarkable legacy of Teddy Pendergrass who left us yesterday at the age of 59.
We reprise our Ska-Doo-Dee-Don mix in the first half-hour, Sherwood drops a couple by Thelonious Moog (yes, Moog) in Hour 2, andwe have a 4(+1) of Ladies Of Ska (and then some!) kicking off Hour 3! Our remaining supply of Lollipops seems to have fallen into a black hole, so we may hold off on ‘em for a few weeks. We had some Skapanese fun with Rico the TSPO, Rockin’ Rumico A Million Bamboo, and some Mule Train. Tarzan checked in (thank you Mr. Review!), the Moon Invaders had their house blown down by Katrina, Little Tempo shook it up (baby!) and we all had fun(n) ‘til The End. Wheeeeee!!
Following Haiti’s huge earthquake on Monday we go to Haitian music for the first hour of Global Beat today. Later we celebrate the musical legacy of Django Reinhardt, in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of his birth, with classics played by his partner from the ’30’s, Stephane Grappelli.
