7/14 in a nutshell…

GotchaSKAvered’s July selection Madness gets the Georgie Fame treatment this week. Mr. Fame, of Blue Flames fame (heh, heh) was Prince Buster’s keyboardist on the Prince’s UK productions such as 1962’s Wash Wash. Shuffle-beat Ska made up the 4()@4, The Selecter stomped their way through Bristol and Miami for a great 4 minutes, and all of this commenced after Sherwood (he of Planet fame, speaking as we were earlier of fame… ) took us around a world populated by the likes of Lydia Lunch, Shiina Ringo and Perfume, not to mention the Son of Godzilla! A double shot of Twist (from Owen Gray and Gary U.S. Bonds) made its way early into the first hour. Funny, even the Bonds number sounded a bit like Ska… Chikitup!

Live music, new releases, ticket giveaways, and guest host Angie Pykonen from KFAI’s In Your Ear What a great way to spend my Wednesday afternoon.

Fuck Knights were our guests in the studio. We chatted and laughed; they played and rocked the joint.

New music included a couple of tracks from the new tribute “Rave On Buddy Holly”. We heard a Justin Townes Earle covering “Maybe Baby” and Paul McCartney’s take on “It’s So Easy”.

Other new music: The Sweetback Sisters, George Thorogood & The Delaware Destroyers, David Bromberg with Levon Helm, Grayson Capps, plus something from the new tribute to The Doors by James Lee Stanley and Cliff Eberhardt entitled “all wood and doors”, (all lower case thank you). Paul Barrere (of Little Feat fame), Timothy B. Schmidt and many other talented musicians helped out, including both John Densmore and Robby Krieger of the Doors.

Tonight we debuted the excellent new Durban Chamber album from Dubsalon; some heavy Alpha Steppa dubplates; and a very cool new EP from Andreia Dacal (on Fresh Poulp). On top of this we featured The Dub Zone Mix #102 “4 Corners of Dub”, and highlighted some of the artists at the 2011 Bayfront Reggae and World Music Fest – including Nkulee Dube, Taj Weekes & Adowa, and Steel Pulse. Finally, in the final hour DJ Baby Swiss put together a fun all-Japan mix featuring: Tsuyoshi Kawakami & his Moodmakers, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Sugar Plant, Perfume, Mantis, Haruomi Hosono, Capsule, and Flare (a.k.a. Ken Ishii).
