5/17 in a nutshell…

It was one week left ‘til the Lee Perry gig at the Cedar (backed by Subatomic Sound System!) and we bookended the opening set of the “Ooh” with a pair of classic Scratch skas (Wishes of the Wicked and Do the Push Push). We reprised “Suzie’s” Swedish-produced Lolli-knockoff “My Cup of Tea” (and we are starting to ponder just how many MBL-influenced knockoffs (not straight-up covers) actually exist… that’ll take some digging. We wrapped up the hour with summa that ollll’ moooooon stompin’! from Roy Ellis’ old band Symarip before back-announcing over some Ska from Studio 5. …Sherwood careened from Horace Silver to Teddy Mertens… …to Hank Marr to Shiina Ringo on his way to Space Station no. 9 (in a Capsule, of course)… and from there, also to the Moon. Oh, and about the Moon… the home of Neil Armstrong’s famous boot prints also turns up in one of the 4(+1)@4 (“hot ska-naries” this week) in a Cabernet Deneuve song! Sakura & the Quests Twisted the GotchaSKAllipop, Prince Fatty & Mutant Hifi had a Nagila, and Giuliano Palma came in from the cold. ‘Bout time, it’s darn near summer!
