Tinariwen’s forthcoming album, Tassili, is filled with dark and brooding lyrics and a stripped-down acoustic sound. They’ve put away the electric guitars for the moment but haven’t lost a bit of their intensity. We debuted two tracks from that CD on today’s African Rhythms and heard plenty of other contemporary and classic sounds from the continent along the way.

8/18 in a nutshell…
Skaravan! We’re all caught up on ska versions of the famous Ellington/Tizol number, and we so GotchaSKAvered that we were able to lay 3 of ‘em on ya this week, with two more coming your way next week to wrap up August. In 4(+1)@4 territory, Ska-By-Accident (or was that Default?) was the order of the week, as the characteristic offbeat found its way into the work of artists more typically found in Sherwood B. Funn’s playlist. Speaking of Mr. Funn, the highlight of ye olde middle hour was a Yukimi Nagano tribute set encompassing 5 different recording artists whose releases she’s appeared on, including her own Little Dragon, and Koop.‘s breakout Summer Sun which introduced Nagano to the world. In the Ooh (which I neglected to introduce as such on the air this week, oops), you’ll find, among others, the guy we in the RSST like to call Neil Ska-daka, inviting all within earshot to learn to Do The Jellyfish. This has now seen release on vinyl ep for the first time ever… I’m gonna have to get this thing for myself just to hear if it’s sourced from the Sting Of Death movie or (hoping, hoping) the actual master tape of the studio session at which the song was cut!
That would be really swella…

Thanks to Nate Dungan (Trailer Trash) for calling in today. He books the music at the State Fair, so we chatted about some of the great acts that will be coming to town at the great Minnesota get together. We also played music by some of the performers who’ll be appearing there including Redd Volkaert, Marcia Ball, Junior Brown, Deke Dickerson, The Turtles, and Dr. John.

In the second hour, our studio guests were members of Murzik, Rhythm & The Sounds, and The Half Hearts.

New music this week included tracks by Imelda May, Moreland & Arbuckle (with Steve Cropper on guitar), The Jayhawks, Hugh Laurie (of House fame) and Old 97’s.

We gave away tickets to Hippiefest…taking place at the Zoo on Sunday night.
