This week in GotchaSKAvered, another double-shot: the Skaravan came to its final destination in Tokyo (from TSPO’s best-of) via a long haul from Kingston (Skatalites, Top Deck take 3). The return flight , also featuring music from Moon Hop, Ska Dynamics and a pair of Madness alumni, was launched by another space-themed 4@4 warp-driven by the Riddimates and winding up at Roy Ellis’ skinhead shindig on the Moon. A space vibe also ran through the Voov, with Sherwood B. Fun dropping Black Hole Sun (Moog Cookbook style), The Girl from Venus (Moogophonic-a-delia from Perrey Kingsley) and Galaxy Tourist (awshucks-irresistable ear-candy from The Peppertones) into the mix. The Opening Oldies Hour (just say ooh) blasted off to the sounds of Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Don Drummond and the band they were all part of, The Skatalites. Also listen for The Selecter’s transitional single The Whisper.
Dueling Granainas and Miles Davis playing a Saeta sandwich a snippet of conversation in which guitarist/composer Ben Abrahamson and Kristina talk about the mix of creativity and technique required to present a successful piece of music or dance.
