Roots

Tonight we hung out at the Dub Club Tiki Bar for the annual Echo Beach end of summer special. A bit different kind of Echo Chamber — as we’ll actually played some rock ‘n roll: that twangy, instrumental surf rock one expects to find at all great tiki bars. Then, once the martinis were well shaken, we’ll gott into some cool old school soul and R&B. We were really cookin’ now, and the Tiki Bar lounge was heavy with kali smoke…so we cooled things down with a variety of lounge sounds, world sounds, weird electronica, and swanky jazz. Some deep Zen meditation followed the martinis and kali…as we aired part 2 of the In the Garden of Dub Mix I put together. This dubwise mix celebrates the pleasures of gardening, the roots of life, and the seasons of nature.

The Iron Lady of Chisholm

Veda Ponikvar is known as “The Iron Lady of Chisholm,” and recognized by the Historical Society as one of Minnesota’s 150 most important people. Born of humble beginnings to Eastern European immigrants on the Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota, Veda attended college, served in World War II, and returned to her hometown to start the Chisholm Free Press. She is a life-long advocate for workers, children and the mentally disabled. KFAI producer Britt Aamodt journeyed up north to talk to this 93-year-old icon.
