Poet & musician Brian Laidlaw

California native Brian Laidlaw considers himself a poet first and musician second. After several years of touring, Laidlaw settled in Minneapolis to earn his Masters of Fine Art in poetry at the University of Minnesota. He wrote the album “wolf wolf wolf” as the audio counterpart to his masters’ thesis and released it in the fall of 2011. In this edition of Live from Minnesota, Laidlaw shares his poetry, music and insight on blending of these art forms. For more information, go to brianlaidlaw.com. Produced for KFAI by Flor Trevino.

Well, we’ve had a couple singles for a few weeks, but tonight we finally debuted the new The Observer in the Star House album from The Orb & Lee Scratch Perry. What a cool combination of musical wizards… Also making its debut tonight, Adrian Sherwood’s new Survival & Resistance (on ON-U Sound). Following these releases, was Steve Steppa’s cool “Zohar Inspired Dubplates”, and then the M.A.K.U. Sound System with their “Makumbala” album. More new releases from David Powell Experience, Dada Afrik & Kalcia, Rebelution, Marlon Asher & Stef Kalloo, John Brown’s Body, A Tribe Called Red, Fatoumata Diawara, Relaxo, and Byutifu! Also tonight, to celebrate the new “Easy Star’s Thrillah” album, we did a Motown/Detroit set, alternating tracks from “Thrillah” and I-Plant’s “BlackSoulRemix2” Motown mash-up album, and finishing with a cool cover of the Spinners “I’ll Be Around”.
